Similar to other fields of application of technology the component of programmable electronic devices and systems in fire protection and security technology grows steadily. The functionality of these devices is significantly influenced by the respective programs, whereby their proper execution and documentation is of special importance.

The concept of requesting an inspection service for software, presupposes that well documented software clearly demonstrates the following:

That a feasible and comprehensible development procedure has been followed.
That the software can be maintained and updated by competent software developers (even if the original developers are not available any more).
That measures have been implemented to avoid common causes of unreliability and to recognise software errors.

Besides comprehensibility of programming, constructive measures for higher reliability of programs are inspected, based on the VdS-Guidelines 2203. The VdS 2203 guidelines distinguish themselves by assimilation with the requirements of existing European standards (Standard Series 54).
